March 25th, 2009 About
Auldearn is a village situated to the east of Nairn in the Highlands of Scotland. Some believe that the village takes its name from the castle of Eren , built by William the Lyon in the 12th century. A 17th Doocot now stands on castle hill, overlooking the site of the Battle of Auldearn , which was an engagement in the ‘War of the Three Kingdoms’, and took place in 1645.
It was also the home of Isobel Gowdie, the Witch of Auldearn. She was tried for witchcraft in 1662.
We’re not sure if we can count any witches amongst our present day population of approx 600. We do have church though, a great Primary School a pub/hotel , a hotel/restaurant with a Michelin chef, a shop and an active Community Council who, along with the support of the village have helped to develop various schemes of the past few years to help further improve our already delightful eastern outpost of the Scottish Highlands .
